MTC November 2018: Modern Classics

Welcome to the ManiaExchange Monthly Track Contest (MTC) for November 2018 and TrackMania's 15th anniversary! Despite past performance metrics, Arkive is hosting again!

In the MTC your task is to build a track on a given theme. Later, all the entered tracks are rated and a winner is found.

Theme of the Month: Modern Classics
To celebrate 15 years of TrackMania, you're tasked with revamping a classic campaign map!

    Theme Specific Rules
    • Choose an official campaign map from TMUF or earlier and revamp it in TM2!
    • Star Tracks are NOT allowed, since those were already built by the community
    • Tracks from non-PC TM titles are allowed, but you must provide a video showing the route. If you could also provide an equivalent map for TMU, that would be preferred but not required
    • Your route should be notably similar to the original map's route
    • Note which map you're basing your entry off of in your map's submission post and/or author comments
    • Beyond the route, you are free to create whatever!

Here's some handy links; any map found within them is a viable source map. If you've got TMUF, you can download any of these maps and open them up in the TMUF editor. Along with this, Stadium maps can be opened in TM2 Stadium. Feel free to look up videos if you don't own any of the earlier TM titles, and feel free to ask if you need me to get some screenshots/videos of a map!

Note that the TMUF page contains a fairly comprehensive list of tracks from the earlier games as well as the TMUF tracks. However, some of the tracks it lists are different from their official counterparts on the original pages (for example, TMUF's TMN A-0 is different from TMN ESWC's A-0). In cases like this, both courses are allowed as a source.

    Example:

Above we've got the unmodified version of TMN ESWC's infamous A-0. This would be a valid source track to design your MTC track based off of (if it weren't so short, that is), and we'll be using it as our example source.

This is an example of an MTC map. You'll notice that, despite not being a one-to-one remake of A-0, it's a strikingly similar course. All defining parts of A-0's route are present, that being just the right chicane in this case. Just about everything else has been modified; the environment and vehicle have both been changed, the name is different, and the scenery is unrecognizable. This is all completely legal! So long as the route is arguably similar, you're free to build and tweak whatever you want!

    General Rules
    • At most, you may submit ONE track
    • Duo tracks are allowed, but each map counts as one track for each author involved
    • Your author time must be more than 15 seconds long. There is no upper limit this month
    • MTC should be present in the track name. Example: "MTC - Return to A01" or "back to the past! (mtc)" (check that any special characters do not break in the TM or MX track name)
    • The track should be built in the most recent version of the game
    • All environments are allowed
    • Blockmixing is allowed
    • Envimixing is allowed
    • Embedded items are allowed
    • Stadium64 base is allowed
    • TMUF vehicles are allowed (they don't need to match the source map's vehicle)
    • Mods are allowed (remember to include locators!)
    • All custom titlepacks are allowed if they're on the MP store! Some handy multi-environment ones include: TM2, TMAll, and MrSloppi's. More valid titlepacks can be found here
    • Puzzle maps are allowed! A tutorial video as well as links to the scripts can be found here
    • Courses requiring OpenPlanet are allowed, but make a note on your map's submission post and/or author comments!
    • Press Forward, Left, Right, or similar tracks are NOT allowed

If you have any questions or would like to contest a rule, feel free to ask!

    Deadlines
    • Your track should be uploaded before the end of Sunday, November 25th at midnight EST. Submissions will continue to be accepted until the thread closes, which will occur the following morning
    • Internal voting is expected to be completed by December 9th
    • Results are calculated and posted soon after internal judging is finished

    Prizes
:gold: Honour and the right to brag! (Jozii used to say that. I wasn't around then, but maybe some of you still remember him? :p)
:gold: The top 3 winners will receive a showcase of a track of their choice (< 10 awards)
:gold: 1st Place: One 15 Years of Trackmania Poster, One T-Shirt, Goodies OR 1 Maniaplanet Key + 25.000 Planets
:silver: 2nd and 3rd Place: One 15 Years of Trackmania Poster, Goodies OR 1 Maniaplanet Key + 10.000 Planets
:bronze: 4th and 5th Place: Goodies OR 10.000 Planets

    How to Submit
    • To submit a track, upload it to MX and post a link to your submission here:
      MTC November 2018: Submissions Thread
    • You can update your track within the deadline as many times as you want
    • Submitted courses may be updated within 24 hours of submissions closing, in case of any necessary last minute changes; new courses may NOT be submitted in this time frame

    Judging: Internal Panel
We will have an internal panel of judges for this month.
    • The internal judging will note some detailed feedback with points based on categories (Theme [20p], Creativity [10p], Fun [10p], Detail [10p])

Good luck, and if you have any questions, please ask!

Oh yeah, I forgot that there were a few TM titles on Nintendo systems. Here's how those maps will work: if you can find me a video that shows the map's route, then you can use non-PC TM title maps. If there happens to be an equivalent map file for TMU as well, that would also be great to send (but it isn't required).

Found a video for its first stadium map: LINK

So there's that. And I have a Wii so I can record any other map to show it if I need to.

Just a quick note, there have been a couple of changes to this MTC. First up, prizes! As you may have noticed in the MX news section, some MX contests are offering prizes this month. This month, the top 5 builders each receive some goodies straight from Nadeo! More information in both the MX newspost and up in the original post.

On that note, we're also temporarily changing the judging method for this month. In order to prevent any score manipulation, judging will be exclusively done by an internal panel of judges. I encourage you to check out the maps regardless!

Another small update: now that MP 4.1 is out, we've officially got TMUF vehicle support in ManiaPlanet! You're free to use TMUF vehicles and are allowed to mix and match as you please; you don't need to stick to the source map's TMUF vehicle if you don't want to.

Submissions are now closed! All submitted maps still have 24 hours to update, just in case you want or need to change something. Judging is expected to be completed around the 9th of December.

Sorry I'm a bit late, but the results are finally in!

:gold:   Lars makes the cut and earns first place! :gold:

  • There is a lot of work in this. ... Very nice map! - Marius
  • Great use custom items to bring the map as close to the original as possible. - Eyebo
  • A textbook example of how you can make a one-to-one recreation of a course while still improving upon the original. - Arkive

:silver:   PangoLynne survived judgement and takes second! :silver:

  • Quick, tight, enjoyable, and with a couple fun details on top! - Arkive
  • You vanished all the annoying parts of the old map. - Marius
  • MT is on point. I really like the use of medal ghosts here. - Eyebo

:bronze:   Keissla.wp hurdles all obstacles and lands in third! :bronze:

  • You got all the main parts of the [original] route here, but with your own twist on it. - Eyebo
  • That upwards transition just before the last wallride is incredibly satisfying. - Arkive
  • This is how the original should have been like. - Marius

pjw and   Askej are also eligible for some goodies with their maps "Twelve-Year Vintage (mtc)" and "mtc-ToB3", respectively.

This time, all podium finishers happened to be part of the MX team. It's not favoritism, I promise!

Lars, PangoLynne, and Keissla«way receive one front page track showcase of their choice (having less than 10 awards).

In addition, Lars, PangoLynne, Keissla«way, pjw, and Askej are eligible for some merch straight from Nadeo. I'll be contacting you all about that.

Thanks for celebrating the 15th anniversary with us and thanks for hanging in with the long judging period! December's MTC is in full swing, and it's all about the new TMUF vehicle archetypes!
