As far as we're concerned, simpler is better. I daresay that this needn't be discussed anymore, because there are pages and pages of it on TMNFX. A wise man once told me that just because something can be done, doesn't mean it should

simple is good, and the current system does work as advertised. BUT, these threads keep coming back which shows that the system is lacking. and when is a better time to implement a new one but with the introduction of a new game.

and a wise man also once said "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." Aldous Huxley (1894—1963).

hell contact the aseco coders and anyone else that makes the stat programs for TM and see if you can find a way to stream the stats from everyones servers to the tracks page. still keep the awards and comments but the added good or bad will certainly weed out the bad tracks that get awards from sycophants.

I might as well just come with my input on this topic, again.

I was hoping for some change with mania-exchange, maybe just a test, but it would've been nice to try out something new. I realize it might be a hard thing to do, especially since TMX/MX have got too few coders than they deserve. There are still things that could improve, but again, this isn't up to us to decide really. The award system is a working system, even with its flaws. The only problem as I see it, is that people don't realize why they are awarding a track. People should award to give positive feedback (or just constructive), and not give the track another point, like +1, or something similar.

I don't believe we have to improve the system, we just have to change people's attitude towards the system.

agree... if people stopped thinking of the award system as a way to 'rate' the track / to 'give it a +1', we wouldn't have all these complaints any more.

I agree with eie.

I've been saying from the beginning that the awards system would be more effective if it was used differently.

ahhhh i see. so what your saying is your system is perfect but several thousand people using TMX are using it wrong.

ok lets reset and try again.
im not bashing TMX in any way. hell i love TMX and was a MOD for a year or so. i know the people, the coders, the highlights and the lowlifes.

but regardless of our personal feelings the community has asked for a fairer way to judge a track and you as the provider should listen as without the community you are nothing and vice versa.

maybe when we award we can rate it by select 1 - 5

1 nothing speciel but still worth an award
2 good
3 awesome
4 fantastic (l)
5 amazing :o
dont take the text to serious its just example to show what i mean
but the rating per award is not showing just the overall rating
rating: 4.5 by 34 :award:

so one track has 3 in rating with 22 award
and another got 3 award and the raiting is 5 and it means this track is underrated try it and is highest in best of the week

this or maybe this

or 2 seperate windows one for rating and another for best of the week

Don't mistake a few common suggestions as the views of the aggregate community.

There's already been a discussion.

It is my opinion that a ratings system will only perpetuate the problem of poor feedback, rather than help it. If the awards and comments would be used for valuable feedback rather than useless emoticons. You could argue that it would give page-viewers a more accurate representation of what they haven't yet decided to download. I disagree. A rating system would be socially abused, just as the awards system is currently. It would give no more of a representation of quality of the track than awards do. A person with 2 friends who '5-star' a his mediocre track versus a upcoming big name who gets two '3-star' ratings from people who are really critiquing the track. That's counterproductive.

I don't think the site gains anything with a rating system.

The paradox is that while the award system doesn't claim to tell people whether or not the track is good or not, it is the measurement for the "best of week"-tracks. Can't we just not rename that? Obviously it is easily misunderstood, because people will assume that the awards are used as rating because of that...

Agree, that's what I'm saying for a long time already. Make it Favorites of the week and peple can't argue the way they are doing it now.
Of course it will not stop all kinds of discussions about the award system but at least it would make a step towards the critics and would make clear verbally it's not supposed to be a rating system.

The name would simply be closer to what that list actually is.
..wasn't me
