Here is why it might be useful to make ratings....

Just Awards
Track1 1
Track2 3
Track3 10
Track4 10
Track5 24
Track6 63

Awards + Ratings
Track1 1 5
Track2 3 1.5
Track3 10 2.3
Track4 10 4.8
Track5 24 1.8
Track6 63 4.1

If we had optional ratings given at the end of an award, you can see more about the track. Don't you already begin to start having ideas of which of those tracks you would prefer to try? It may not be the on with the most award or most stars, although in that example, you would most likely want to see Track4.

Compare that to the first list and you would have no idea Track4 is worth seeing at least as much as Track5 or Track6, unless you knew the authors.

Now maybe track4 is by an author you never heard of, now you really see some benefits of ratings, they can show you a direction you not have followed before.

the problem is, as i said in my last post, that if you need to award a track in order to 'rate' it, the rating will tell nothing about the track since only those ones who liked it rated it.

That wouldn't work because people would just skip writing feedback on the award, and just rate instead.

Mixing rating and feedback doesn't work, it never has, and it's why it was a bad idea to begin with.

exactly. and as soon as people start awarding a track to be able to rate it, awards get totally meaningless.

not if we are still using awards to list tracks by, as all you do then is push a track you dont like up the awards list, and that would be silly.

Plus, in the rating, 1 = that the track is worth an award (ie that you like it).

The way you talk makes me think that you want to just give tracks you dont like low ratings, that not the idea, its to give an extra insight into what is behind the awards.

link the ratings to aseco and get the community opinion. they have just raced the track and are more likely to give you a honest rating.

oh and dont take offence at the things i say. if i really wanted to say something specific about someone i would do it in private. here on the public forums its about the discussion. my note about obstruction was just a point that most of the mods reactions were negative to the issue been discussed when TMX were actually in the process of doing something about it. this thread could have been killed stone dead with a "yeah we know and are doing something about it".
you mods give up your own time to do this and you have my appreciation. :d

i'm just saying what obviously would happen if we had this kind of rating system.

once again:
imagine there's a track that some people like, some don't and some like just enough to award it.
the last group of people will probably rate the track as 1 or 2.
if these people decided not to award the track (for whatever reason), the award count would be lower of course.
but the 'rating' would be higher!

so, what does tell more about how much people appreciate a certain track - awards or that rating system suggested here?

An award isn't a way to rate a track to begin with, is it? So people who would want to rate the track low could do that, without affecting its actual rating. I foresee award like: "THIS TRACK IS BAD 1/5"

Awarding shouldn't be a rating system, because then it becomes pointless to write feedback on them.

It's a system full of paradoxes and hypocritical values, I say fuck it, why not just remove the whole thing? I think it would be fun to see how well MX would be after a month without it, just as an experiment.

Well this is okay, out of the people who did award the track we have a more immediate idea how much they liked it. We already have a job to pursuade people to award the tracks they like, maybe this rating can help people understand that awarding the tracks they like is a good thing to do.

Those people can have the error of their ways politely explained to them.
