The first circuit that it's not a street one, Autodromo Do Estoril was build in 1972 on a rocky plateau near Alcabideche, 9 km from Estoril. The course has two hairpin turns, noticeable elevation changes and a long start/finish straight. Throughout the early years it hosts national races. It's not until 1984 where it started to host races under FIA, most importantly the site of the first Portuguese Grand Prix. From 1984 to 1996 it's been part of Formula 1, usually being one of the last races of the seasons (the exception being the 1985 event). Although it was dropped in 1997, it hosts races, mostly motorcycles, top-level single seaters and touring cars. As of today (around 2010) no major racing series have been hosted.
