Recently, Khrome asked on the TrackMania Discord server,
"Does anyone know what track they used in the canyon launch trailer?"
Do you remember
the launch trailer? It's that one where a single camera flies through the track as hundreds of cars drive through the map.
But was the track ever released? On ManiaPlanet forums I found
a post where Sprint (Nadeo's video maker at the time) said he would release the map on
ManiaExchange. But that was over 7 years ago and it looks like the map never got uploaded.
I also noticed most of the map doesn't have CPs, and it seems to me that some areas don't even connect to other parts. I'm wondering if this might be why it was never released. But this is just a theory.
Even if the original track could be validated, I'm pretty sure Sprint used the feature in MediaTracker where you can place your car wherever you want on the track and record your ghost. Surely one of the best "new" features of MediaTracker when it got upgraded in TM2. This would have made it easier to make the trailer, as he would be able to move the ghosts around and perfectly time them to be visible while the camera passed by.
But back to the present.
Since the track never got released, I started watching the trailer frame by frame to see how much information I could extract about the layout of the map and scenery. Much of the map is actually visible, and there are times when you see the same area from multiple angles which gives ultimately a nice 3D view of where everything should be placed.
So I decided to start rebuilding the entire map based on what could be seen in the trailer.
Then, at the end, I also wanted a map players could drive. Wherever possible I kept the original blocks. In some cases though, I made some modifications so that almost all the roads could be connected together. Of course I also added plenty of CPs.
Invisible areas of the map were also filled in with what I imagined could be there, such as behind the huge wall, or in some tunnels. I tried my best not to use any blocks that were unavailable at the time the trailer was made; that includes terrain. The one exception is a wallride CP I used.
The original map also didn't have any directional signs, so those were added.
Fully respawnable
GPS (for those who want to watch me crash into walls)
The map is
not my usual style. But I'm happy to have completed the project and so I'm sharing it with those who would like to play it.
EDIT: I found a 7 year old comment from Sprint on YouTube that says the track was originally called "Hidden Chicken". I love it.
