Hello all
I've been experimenting in the Older game Nations / united and i found some fun tricks that so it seems have never been done before. (idea brought to me by kristjan)

I can make the blocks and the mood change during play..

I can make animated lava and water

This works by using bik files instead of .dds
i'm not active in TM2 so I don't know if this also would work on costum objects and mods in TM2
TM2 doesn't support Bik files but it does support WebM

In united the files have to be smaller than 60KB and have to be 64x64 or 128x128 or 256x256 etc...

Imagine a RPG where the mod change texture mid run and it's suddenly winter
Or a mod where everything is sunny and colorfull, when it's suddenly getting dark and the walls appear to be covered in blood...
The ideas are endless, but my time isn't ...
So I'd suggest that you try it :-)
If it doesn't work, you can always check the mod on united

track here...

youtube here

The mod is located in skins/vehicles/carcommon/zipsfiremod
good luck

well it's not easy to explain
but check out on nations my tracks toasty and land of confusion
the best thing to use is very short looped animations
for long animations like the skycolor i use a bik file 16x16 with different settings from day to night
i used for my last mod about 20 images and put a delay on every single frame and now it takes 15 -20 minutes before it gets dark
for other textures i found out i recieve the best quality by using a dds file on the for example stadiumcircuitD
and bik for the stadiumcircuitS
It's easy this way to add glowing neon textures and stuff
for grass and dirt you need to use the same principle like with the skycolor or you can use dds files for dirt1 and dirt2 and put a glowing or heat effect onto the grass or dirtmask file
the files cannot be bigger than 60kB and here lies the main problem
but if you check what i can do with it, it's worth to try it :-)
especially the mood is cool :-)
try this file as skycolor in the day mood map
http://www.speedyshare.com/msgmn/SkyColor.bik
you can also use it onto StadiumFXClouds to make it pitch black at some point
i Can time the textures but it's not worth the effort since no one will notice 2 things at once, except the day and night mood with buildings...
if you have any questions, ask me :-)
check out the older mods on the trackpages on nations

Best thing is to use looping animations
but for normal images i put 2 or more pictures behind eachother and put a delay on each frame
this can be several minutes in my experiments
so it's possible to change the skycolor every few minutes for an RPG
or even change the complete mod's texture after a time.
Grass can become snow...
or when it's light everything looks normal but when the lights go out you see bloodstains everywhere
you can even make it pitchblack by placing the same file as skycolor and fxclouds.
Options are limitless..
I can't experiment in tm2
Bikfiles are not supported but WEBM is.
Good luck with it ;-)

This is very interesting news with potential to become revolutionary to modding/scenery - thank you very much for sharing!

I do wonder, though, are you in some way able to control the animations or are they simply always looping alpng as you play the track? Some of your ideas seem to suggest a level of control but in such case I'm curious as to how you are able to do it.
